The governor of Maine signed a same-sex marriage bill last week that was passed by Legislature. He has said he reversed his position on such marriages after deciding it was a matter of equal protection under the states constitution.
“I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law"
With the enactment of the bill gay activists are getting closer to their goal of making same sex marriage legal throughout the New England states.
The law would normally go into effect 90 days after the legislature adjourns.
Opponents of the bill will need to collect about 55,000 signatures to enact a people's veto of the legislation.
