The national minimum wage increased from $6.55 to $7.25. But you must remember that each state is going to be affected differently. Some states in the union have higher minimum wages than the national average.
In that case which ever amount has the higher wage whether its the state or national the high will amount of currency will take affect. This will affect about 4.5 million employees who will be getting a raise! Still confused here's an example:
National wage: $7.25 as of 7/2009
Georgia wage: $6.75 as of 6/2009
Georgia wage: now $7.25 as of 7/2009
California wage: $8.00 as of 6/2009
California wage: $8.00 as of 7/22009 [wage stays the same because its higher than national].
Only 19 states in the union have higher wages while 31 states had lower minimum wages:
Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
